Development Update

Development of DeskSpace 1.5.5 and TopDesk 1.6 is coming along very nicely.

DeskSpace 1.5.5 will be released in around 2 weeks, and will focus on improving the way windows are managed and manipulated on the virtual desktops. Desktop switching performance will be drastically improved, as will application compatibility.

TopDesk 1.6 will be released in 2-3 months, and will include new layout modes, including a CoverFlow-like mode, and a revamped user input manager that will allow you to use multiple layouts (e.g. Flip and Spatial) at the same time.

TopDesk 1.5.5 Development Update

March 23, 2008

We’re continuing to work on the TopDesk 1.5.5, and had expected to release it at the beginning of March. The release has been delayed, however, as we’ve found new ways to improve and optimize existing features and have added features that increase compatibility with Vista and Vista x64. Therefore, as a stop-gap, we’ve released TopDesk 1.5.4.1, which fixes the main complaint with TopDesk 1.5.4.

We expect the TopDesk 1.5.5 to go into beta within the next week or two. The main features include:

  • A new window detection algorithm that is compatible with more non-standard applications.
  • A window exclusion/compatibility list that gives users the ability to manage which windows TopDesk displays and how it displays them.
  • An application compatibility list that lets users specify that TopDesk should disable itself when certain applications are running.
  • Better support for Vista and Vista x64, including the ability to tile/hide Administrator application windows when running under a standard user account on Vista, and improved handling of the Win+Tab hot key.

Upgrade Policy Clarification

January 12, 2008

A lot of users have asked us about how upgrades will be affected when version 2.0 of DeskSpace and TopDesk are released, so we’ve updated our upgrade policy to clarify that:

  • Upgrades from 1.x.x to 1.9.9 are free for existing customers, and when version 2.0 is released upgrades from 2.x.x to 2.9.9 will be free for owners of version 2.0 and above.
  • If you purchase 1.x.x up to 90 days before version 2.0 is released, you’ll receive an upgrade to version 2.0 (and all 2.x.x upgrades) for free.
  • If you’ve already purchased 1.x.x or if you purchase it more than 90 days before version 2.0 is released, you can upgrade to 2.0 at a discounted price.

The upgrade discount will be between 30% and 50% off the retail price of version 2.0, and we’re currently planning on releasing both TopDesk and DeskSpace 2.0 around Q3 2008.

Displaying Multiple Excel Files In TopDesk

June 28, 2007

It’s possible to tile multiple Excel files in TopDesk, but a bit of configuration is required. The steps are:

Step 1

In Excel, go to Tools->Options->General and tick Ignore Other Applications.

Step 2

1. In Explorer, go to Tools->Folder Options->File Types
2. Select the XLS file type and click the Advanced button
3. Select the Open action from the list and click the Edit button.
4. Uncheck the Use DDE option.
5. Change the Application used to perform action text to:

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE” /e “%1″

Step 3

Repeat Step 2 for any other file types you want to use (e.g. XLT files) that have Excel as their default application.

Help Us Make TopDesk More Compatible With Open Source Applications

June 21, 2007

We’ve added support in TopDesk 1.5.3 for applications that use non-standard techniques to draw their windows, such as Java applications and open source software that uses cross-platform GUI frameworks.

Since there are so many different open source GUI frameworks out there we don’t currently support them all, so we’re looking for your help to make TopDesk as compatible as possible. If you’ve found an open source application that doesn’t show up correctly in TopDesk, please let us know and we’ll do our best to make it compatible.
