Gaming Issue

Postby ziptrx » Tue Mar 04, 2008 4:14 am

Yes another issue with TopDesk and games. If I leave TopDesk enabled and start Rollercoaster Tycoon, then leave the game, TopDesk does not reenable. If I disable TopDesk first, then start the game, the game automatically minimizes to the desktop and will not maximize. The game only works if I leave TopDesk enabled. There was talk about adding an option to have an exclude list? Is it still possible to request this option? This is the only game that I have this problem with.

We'll have a look at the issue. It's very strange behavior, because when TopDesk is disabled it is for all intents and purposes a "dummy" application - the only thing it does is check whether it has been enabled again.

We're adding an exclude list in a future version of TopDesk.

The one thing that I did notice, is when RCT minimizes, TopDesk's tooltip states that it detected EXPLORER.EXE and remains disabled. This is way it continues to remain disabled after exiting the game. If I close EXPLORER.EXE, then it reenables. Hopefully this will help.

We'll look into the Explorer.exe problem. Does changing the "When Full Screen 3D Accelerated Application Detected" setting in the Advanced tab of the Options dialog to "Do Nothing" make any difference?

I will check this tonight and let you know tomorrow. I forgot to mention that I am using version 1.5.3. I installed 1.5.4 last night and am here to report some problems with that version. First it would not enable if the setting to disable during full screen apps was enabled. If I disabled that setting, it would work fine. The second problem is the reason I am staying with 1.5.3. I have a Logitech MX1000 mouse and it includes a button, which by default, initializes Win+Tab option in Vista. In the mouse settings I have changed that button to operate for something, but if I hold the button then Win+Tab is started. The problem is with 1.5.4 Vista's Win+Tab option starts, then TopDesk starts. It is very annoying. However, in 1.5.3 I can hold the button and TopDesk overrides Vista's Win+Tab. Hopefully this makes sense. Again I will report on your last post, tomorrow.

As per your request, I checked more into the problem. It appears to be a problem with older games. The same problem has happened with Startcraft. When I get home, I will take screenshots and all, then type out the post in Word. This will allow you to see and understand what is going on, since there will be picture. As far as I know right now, TopDesk does not like legecy games.

ziptrx: Are the older games running at a different resolution to the desktop? If so, you might be seeing a v1.5.3 bug that was fixed in v1.5.4 - see the TopDesk What's New page for more information.

I'm going to assume they are, but I can't run 1.5.4. It will not even enable for me, unless I disable the option to automatically disable when detecting a full screen. Also 1.5.4 doesn't override Vista's Win+Tab as well as 1.5.3 does. When running 1.5.4, set to use Win+Tab hotkey, Vista's option activates first, followed by TopDesk. These are the main reasons I have not updated.

There's no change in the way TopDesk hooks the Win+Tab key between 1.5.3 and 1.5.4, so it's strange that you're seeing this behavior: we'll look into it.

What other applications are you running on your system when you try to run TopDesk 1.5.4?
