We're currently looking into whether it's technically possible to have auto-align *and* different icons on each desktop. If it is, we'll certainly implement this feature.

Hi Jan,

I'd just like to start by saying that we are not in the business of selling buggy software. We work very hard to make sure DeskSpace is as compatible and bug free as possible, and fix any reported bugs as soon as we can.

Unfortunately what you're seeing is not a bug, it is a technical requirement of Microsoft Windows. If we don't turn off alignment then it's not possible to have icons on each desktop, because Windows forces all icons on to the same desktop when alignment is enabled.

If you want to restore desktop icon alignment then you are welcome to turn off the "Show different icons on each desktop" option in the Manage Desktop Icons dialog. This will align your icons, but prevent you from displaying different icons on each desktop.

We have been discussing the Manage Desktop Icons feature on the blog and with other users via email (they don't understand why their icons disappear when they switch desktops). We work very very hard on DeskSpace, and to be accused of selling bug ridden software simply because one of our features conflicts with a Windows setting is extremely disheartening.

Therefore, based on your reactions to this feature and the comments of others we will be disabling the "Show different icons on each desktop" feature by default, starting from the next version of DeskSpace. If users want to use this feature they will be able to re-enable it at their convenience. We will also be adding a tutorial to explain this feature so that users understand that enabling it will cause them to have different icons on each desktop, but will require desktop icon alignment to be disabled.

We are also developing other technical solutions and workarounds to this problem. We have been working on them for many months, but they are still in the early stages of development and will have to be tested extensively before they are included in an official release. We will therefore be conducting a beta test of these solutions (available to all current DeskSpace customers) in the near future. We will start with the most promising of the solutions, and then move on to other solutions if any compatibility problems arise.

Hello OtakuSupport ,

I was looking for a program that will make multiple desktops, i like to work
with an empty desktop because i work with many files.
And already have many files/folders on my desktop.
i am also sorry for you all, to be honest otakusoftware it does not matter that the program
has more than one bug(s), but it is useless if all icons have to be alligned by hand.
Not many people will buy this program for 24.95 with the bug(s)!
i installed your software but now i feel very bad because of this one bug or as you call it "technical requirement"!
The program looks good but it is useless unless this issue is fixed.
On your index page it says "say goodbye to desktop clutter" and "DeskSpace gives you more space" wich is not correct, it also had to say : And you must allign all icons manually. (i think)
You have to understand that i am just telling it like it is. (how i feel about it).
Maybe you can do something to change that or at least think about it.
Im not accusing anyone.
maybe this writing will help you to understand the problem.

Anyway thank you for your reaction.

Jan: If you want to have your icons automatically aligned you can simply turn off the desktop icon feature.

We've explained the reasons as to why alignment is disabled, but you still consider it to be a bug. Regardless, we understand that the software doesn't do what you want, and our inability to deliver this single feature, despite any technical limitations imposed by the Windows operating system, makes the software completely useless to you.

At this point we feel we understand the problem you are experiencing and have explained why it occurs, how to workaround the problem in the current version of DeskSpace, and the steps we will be taking to remedy the problem in the future.

Do you agree, or do our explanations of a workaround and promises that we're working hard on a solution fall flat? If so, what can we do?

Hello,

"Jan: If you want to have your icons automatically aligned you can simply turn off the desktop icon feature."

Yes i can and also wil get all other files/folders on all desktops wich is not logical.
This is my last reaction.
But i have 1 more tip mabe you should look at :D !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go to: http://www.dexpot.de/

This software combined with your software is perfect.
because they can allign different folders/files on different desktops.
i hope this will help you further.
If so, then i will buy it! :D

We are well aware of Dexpot, and we can, without a doubt, state that they do not support Windows Auto Arrange and Auto Align. Instead, they fake the Auto Align (by detecting the event and then turning it off again), which is why their desktop icon management is so clunky, and why Auto Align never stays "on".

While our "bug" is that we don't support auto aligned desktop icons, their "bug" is that their auto alignment is clunky, ugly, and does not work all the time. Again, to be perfectly clear, we understand that from your point of view their software "works" with Auto Align and ours does not, and we do not dispute that.

At this point we would usually launch into a technical discussion of the drawbacks of their methods and the advantages of the method we're researching. I don't believe this would be helpful in this case, but regardless we believe we have far better solution, one that correctly handles Auto Arrange and Auto Align. If our research pans out it will be a far better solution to the one Dexpot uses. If our research doesn't pan out then we can fallback to a Dexpot-like solution. This is a last resort, however.

We hope you'll spend some time ttying out the new Auto Align feature (or bug fix ;) ) when we release it!
